In August 2026 there were 74 private student housing schemes with 21,346 beds in the eight main university cities, 9.5% more than a year earlier. In 2026, six schemes with 1,856 beds opened and a further six, with 2,386 beds, are under construction.
Of the students surveyed, 64.2% would consider living in private student housing at a price comparable to renting a room or an apartment, with most making that decision conditional on location and quality as well. At present, 2.1% say they live in
private student housing.
Housing also shapes educational choices: for 58.8% of respondents the availability of affordable housing mattered when choosing a university, deciding whether to change university or whether to study in a particular place. Students living with family gave up the chance to study where they wanted or to change university more often than market tenants (25.0%
against 15.3%).
